Course Description: Have you ever had students who meltdown or become defiant? Do you get tired of your students teasing and tattling? What about silliness and showing off? If so, this course is for you! During this self-paced, online course for K-6 educators, we will dig into the book, Teasing, Tattling, Defiance and More from Responsive Classroom. We will look at the Responsive Classroom approach to discipline using positive approaches to ten common classroom behaviors. Our journey will guide us through proactive steps and reactive strategies. This course will also give new ideas about successful classroom rules, how to use interactive modeling and teacher language, and rewarding class meetings and energizers.

Stage 1 - Desired Results: Enduring Understanding(s) & Essentials Question(s): EU: Positive teacher language and interactive modeling helps students learn. Using proactive steps and reactive strategies to respond in the moment to common classroom behavior allows teachers to establish the kind of classroom environment necessary to support quality instruction and student learning. EQ: What language can we use to get the best from our students? What proactive steps and responding strategies can we use to address disruptive behavior?

Stage 1 - Desired Results: Knowledge & Skills Learn how to use positive teacher language that helps children learn. Learn how to use interactive modeling to teach correct classroom behavior. Learn how to address classroom behavior in the moment and through proactive steps.

Stage 2 - Assessment Evidence: Teachers will reflect on all of their new learning using the following tools: Plus / Delta chart reflection on the Responsive Classroom approach to discipline Reflection on why children misbehave Reflection on the Responsive Classroom approach to creating successful classroom rules Reflection on Interactive Modeling Reflection on the Five Guiding Principles of Effective Positive Language and Reinforcing, Reminding and Redirecting Language Reflections on positive steps to take and how to respond in the moment when dealing with each of the following: Listening and attention challenges Cliques Defiance Silliness and showing off Dishonesty Teasing Tattling Disengagement Too much physical contact Frustrations and meltdowns
